Teachers play an important role as facilitators and a resource person to monitor their student’s academic progression

PERSONALISE LEARNING CONTENT TO FULFIL LEARNER’S NEEDS

For students to successfully achieve learning outcomes, teachers play an important role as facilitators and a resource person to monitor their student’s academic progression.

FrogPlay is the perfect tool to empower teachers to drive their student’s learning progress by offering them the ability to personalise lessons and utilise reporting tools to monitor academic progression.

THE JOURNEY OF SJK(C) CHOONG CHENG KEDAH, MALAYSIA

Most often, rural schools do not receive adequate teaching and learning materials. However, with over 10,000 ready made quizzes, the teachers of SJK(C) Choong Cheng believes that they are able to use FrogPlay’s quiz bank and reporting tool to involve their students in fun, interactive lessons.

FrogPlay was a new tool for the school. As such, it was important for both teachers and students to learn how to use FrogPlay. Gulai (Game Up Learning And Involvement) module sessions were held for teachers who after familiarising themselves with it, held workshop sessions for to educate their students about using FrogPlay.

Before long, students were having fun in lessons and became motivated to take charge of their own learning in their studies.

WHEN ACCESS TO LEARNING CONTENT ARE LIMITED

As a small Chinese school with 56 students, relevant learning content that focuses on the student’s needs are limited.

Because, the root of the matter is, learning outcomes cannot be accomplished if your learning materials are not able to get your students to understand what you’re teaching.

A STUDENT'S NEEDS COME FIRST

SJK(C) Choong Cheng is a school that really impressed us and is the epitome of what a 21st century school is. Their strategy during the FrogPlay Championships has enabled a level of interaction within the school to enable formal (using FrogPlay as teaching material) and informal learning (independent learning in students).

What made this school so successful was to strategise their support for their students in different ways. The initiatives as follows:

1) ENABLING TEACHERS TO CREATE PERSONALISED QUIZZES

Think back to your favourite teachers in school. Part in parcel of why they remain so to this day was because they put your needs first and supported you to the highest extent possible so that you could realise your potential.

Poor literacy and numeracy skills was a common issue at this school and it was clear that teachers needed to engage and challenge their students to approach learning in a different way.

A perfect example of thinking outside the box was using FrogPlay to create fun quizzes for languages by formulating questions into riddles! FrogPlay soon became a popular tool to teach with and teachers started using FrogPlay in after-school classes, during Open Lab hours (recess period) throughout the school week and even during the school holidays!

At the end of the day, teaching and learning materials cannot be created without aligning it to an educational objective. The teaching department had clear goals and demonstrated great camaraderie to build teaching resources that appealed to and suited the competencies of their students.

2) EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO LEARN

Student empowerment happens when schools provide them with the opportunities they need to take charge of their studies. These are the following initiatives SJK(C) Choong Cheng created to encourage use of FrogPlay amongst students:

a) School Competitions & Language week

School activities such as these were held to reinforce the fun learning environment FrogPlay provides. With added student recognition and prizes, student were more motivated to become the best they can be!

b) “Rakan Sebaya - Rakan Angkat” Program

Due to diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, devices and data plans were not immediately available for some. Because of how tight-knit this school community is, students with computers at home hosted FrogPlay sessions so their friends could come over and use FrogPlay during the weekends!

c) Using FrogPlay during Exams

During examination season, students utilised quizzes for exams to build confidence and prepare for upcoming tests.

3) ENGAGING PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL INITIATIVES

Parent-teacher collaboration works when parents are positively involved in their child’s education. As such, they wanted to educate parents so that their students could learn independently at home.

One of the key strategy was to ensure there was good communication between parents and teachers. Parent/Teacher conferences were held to educate and demonstrate what FrogPlay was, how it would benefit students and to share what the latest school initiatives were.

4) COLLABORATING WITH DISTRICT EDUCATION OFFICERS

Teachers of SJK(C) Choong Cheng alongside other schools worked with nearby education officers to help strategize implementation plans for FrogPlay. Soon after, the district officers held a competition with a Bahasa Melayu theme and rewarded the top 40 students in FrogPlay.

KEY OUTCOMES

SJK(C) Choong Cheng experienced a positive shift in students attitudes towards learning to the point that students were motivating teachers to keep positive during any competitions they have participated in!

Through FrogPlay’s learning environment, students were seen to be more confident in examinations and showed a newfound appreciation for subjects in school. Students were also more interested in completing FrogPlay assignments in comparison to completing workbooks.

Teachers also benefited greatly by being able to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the classroom as soon as a child completed a quiz. This help provide greater insights to building a bigger, better quiz bank on FrogPlay.

One of the most inspiring outcomes was the academic improvement in students. With FrogPlay, a majority of students were able to correctly answer questions that appeared in preparatory quizzes for examinations.

Currently, SJK(C) Choong Cheng is on a mission to help empower small schools like themselves to make a positive change in education.
