How do you increase accessibility to education technology in a world of unequal access?

LEARNING ANYWHERE, ANYTIME

The future is about: access to learning anywhere, anytime. When learning materials are available to students, they are able to discover how to learn and what to learn.

This is our reason for launching FrogPlay.

We want to level the playing field so that no school is left behind in their right to equality in education. Working closely with Pelangi, a trusted education publisher in Malaysia, FrogPlay continues to host well over 10,000 ready made quizzes so that students can access and learn anywhere, anytime.

THE JOURNEY OF SK SUNGAI BINJAI SELANGOR, MALAYSIA

To create an impactful academic program, SK Sungai Binjai knew they had to educate its teachers and students about FrogPlay, its benefits and how to use it.

Teachers were exposed to FrogPlay through the Gulai (Game Up Learning And Involvement) module, a workshop to learn about FrogPlay. For students, a mentorship group called Frog Cyber was formed so that they could help other students to learn how to use FrogPlay. Teachers started by selecting a core set of students that would, after receiving FrogPlay training, mentor their friends on using FrogPlay.

WHEN DEVICES ARE LIMITED

Managing a large classroom of 40 students became easier because FrogPlay made lessons more fun! Students grew more motivated to learn independently at their own pace. But, sharing devices to use FrogPlay to teach a school of over 3,000 students soon became a challenge.

How do you increase accessibility to education technology in a world of unequal access?

USING THE POWER OF DEVICES

The reason why SK Sungai Binjai initiatives were so successful was because of their ability to increase their students’ accessibility to the tools they need - devices and internet connectivity through parental involvement.

The teachers of SK Sungai Binjai collaborated with the Parent Teacher Association (PIBG) and hosted a special show-and-tell workshop about FrogPlay in the school’s computer lab. The workshop was a success! Seeing a positive impact FrogPlay would have on their child, parents advocated FrogPlay initiatives and allowed the use of FrogPlay at home.

To ensure there is an opportunity for students to use FrogPlay anytime, anywhere; a variety of initiatives were created. They are as follows:

1) EARLY MORNING CLASSES

Morning classes were scheduled from 7am - 7.40am everyday except for Tuesdays and is exclusive for students without internet at home. These classes were dedicated to complete FrogPlay quizzes assigned by teachers during school hours.

2) DURING SCHOOL HOURS

To sustain a fun, learning environment, SK Sungai Binjai held a variety of FrogPlay competitions were such as: monthly competitions; hosting subject specific awards; weekly Leaderboard prizes and much more!

School leadership also equipped teachers with Altitude, a YES 4G mobile and tablet devices so that teachers can facilitate learning anywhere, anytime through the Frog Assignment.

All these initiatives helped the teachers and students sustain FrogPlay usage and purposeful learning during school hours.

3) REPLACEMENT CLASSES

Teachers were encouraged to schedule replacement classes whenever possible in the computer lab so that students could learn with FrogPlay. To ensure the lab was well equipped with Netbooks, the school also collaborated with the Parent Association board (PIBG) to help support financially.

4) LEARNING AT HOME & DURING HOLIDAYS

To encourage after school hours learning, teachers ensured that students would not run out of learning content to choose from in FrogPlay. They held a series of workshops (Latihan Dalam Perkhidmatan) to create and share quizzes within their school. Over the Hari Raya festivities, students were doing FrogPlay quizzes using various devices such as desktops and tablets!

KEY OUTCOMES

Following these initiatives, SK Sungai Binjai experienced improvements in academic results and a more positive attitude towards learning especially from disengaged and distracted students. They have learnt to learn from their mistakes and understand concepts taught in lessons through quiz repetition.

As a whole, these initiatives to create learning opportunities anywhere, anytime resulted in an excitement for students to attend morning classes at their own initiatives and reported that 30% of their student population are engaging in revision and homework at home!

Currently, SK Sungai Binjai is still continuing to use FrogPlay in other school initiatives.
