SMK SKudai, JOHOR
We believe FrogPlay is the tool to help students become independent learners.
Through FrogPlay, students are able to take charge of their learning anytime, anywhere with complete autonomy when partaking in quizzes, having fun with games and self-analysing academic progress through reports.
THE JOURNEY OF SMK SKUDAI JOHOR, MALAYSIA
In a traditional classroom, the role of a teacher is to motivate students with proper instructions. Whereas, when educating older students, a teacher takes on a more facilitative role by creating a suitable learning environment.
The teachers of SMK Skudai first educated themselves through the Gulai (Game Up Learning And Involvement) module, a workshop to learn about FrogPlay, its benefits and how to use it. After discussing their goals for their school, SMK Skudai decided to introduce FrogPlay into their teaching curriculum.
To generate buzz and an awareness for FrogPlay the school hosted a launch ceremony during assembly. They went all out! Pictures were shared internally within the school, mini-FrogPlay competitions were announced and even a Frog head mascot made an appearance!
A PERCEIVED LACK OF INTEREST IN LEARNING
But the question still remains.
How do you inspire students to take control of their own learning - both inside and out of the classroom?
EMPOWER STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING
Student-centered learning is all about involving students in planning, implementation and assessments. Before creating initiatives, it is important to find a balance between teacher guidance and letting students explore learning opportunities for themselves.
This was the right start that made SMK Skudai’s implementation plan so successful.
The teachers formed a collaborative effort with a student association called the Frog Student Champion and offered them to be a part of school initiatives by becoming ambassadors of FrogPlay. Part of their roles and responsibilities included hosting FrogPlay training workshops for their schoolmates every week under the guidance of a teacher who is also a Frog VLE coordinator.
Because recommendation from friends is the most credible form of endorsement, there was a high degree of student engagement, challenge and enthusiasm at the center of each school initiative. These initiatives are as follows:
1) MONTHLY COMPETITION & STUDENT RECOGNITION
SMK Skudai noticed that their students thrived on healthy rivalry in academics. By initiating monthly competitions through the use of FrogPlay, students were very engaged and challenged each other to be the best academic performer.
With added monthly recognition for the top 10 students and the top 3 performer on the games Leaderboard, students were more motivated to succeed even to the extent of using FrogPlay at home!
2) LOYALTY PROGRAM
One of the more unique sophisticated initiatives done by SMK Skudai was to implement a loyalty program. A reward card was given to a student with the goal of redeeming a button badge after completing a set of hours. The main draw was on the exclusivity of prize as it was given to the first 200 students that completed and handed in their cards.
3) SCHEDULING FROG VLE SESSIONS
Proper guidance were also given by teachers. Morning and afternoon classes were scheduled for students where they are to use FrogPlay at least once a week. FrogPlay was used as an assessment tool to test a student’s understanding of concepts at the end of each class or subject topic.
SMK Skudai experience a positive impact in students’ attitudes towards learning. Students are becoming more independent as FrogPlay lets them study at their own pace. Through quiz repetition, learning to understand concepts without pressure to understand perfectly in one try.
Since using FrogPlay analytics, teachers are able to build better rapport with their students. When students are more motivated to excel in their studies, teachers are able to facilitate a richer learning experience by understanding the level of competency of their students in a particular question, quiz and subject topic.
Currently, SMK Skudai is still using FrogPlay in school initiatives and has plans to continue their efforts to promote independent learning amongst their students.
